Dummy Cameras, a Tool to Deter Burglars or just a false sense of security?
Many see security cameras as a good investment because they can deter crime and record it as well. Instead, in order to save some money, some people go for the cheapest option and hang fake or dummy security cameras instead of the real deal.
The idea behind this is that burglars or intruders will see the fake security cameras and be fooled into thinking they are real, which in turn should alleviate crime or property damage.
The fact of the matter is; many criminals can easily tell the difference between real and fake security systems. Often times the dummy cameras are easily spotted as being fake, which results in a higher risk of break-ins, theft, or vandalism.
Do Dummy Security Cameras Fool Burglars?
The idea behind buying fake security cameras, and for them to be effective, the potential criminal must believe that the cameras are real. The problem with this is that many burglars can distinguish the difference between a real and fake at a glance for three common reasons.
Red Flashing Lights
Many of the dummy cameras purchased come with red blinking lights to draw attention to itself and convince potential criminals that they are being recorded and that someone is watching them. This couldn’t be more wrong. The red blinking light ironically does more harm than good. Due to the fact that most real security cameras don’t have easily visible red blinking lights. This will often signal that you have fake cameras right away.
Most modern day security cameras have multiple wires sticking out of them. The legitimate security cameras have a coaxial cable in order to transmit video and a conductor wire to provide power to the system. Dummy cameras have just one single wire, or no wires, indicating to the possible intruder that your “cameras” are nothing but a prop.
Good security cameras will track the movement of an intruder. If there is just and arbitrary lens movement, a burglar will spot that and realize it is an imposter camera.
It Cannot Prove Anything
Most importantly, a dummy security camera can only help deter criminal activity at best. Should the crook identify the camera to be a fake and commit the crime, it will not provide any proof of the occurrence of such an activity. There will be no faces to identify, no solid evidence that can help you or the police know more about the crime.
Additionally, if potential criminals get a whiff of the fact that the security systems in your vicinity are fake, they may not hesitate in executing the crime at all, which leaves you highly vulnerable with zero real protection.
